What Are Acne Scars? What To Do To Treat Them?

Acne TreatmentAcne can sometimes provide a double whammy of suffering. First you have to go through the horror of the acne, then when they are gone, they leave their mark...acne scars.

Acne is the lesions or pimples caused when the pores on the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. A plugged hair follicule is a great breeding ground for the bacteria that causes the red and pus-filled bumps known as pimples.

Nodules (Cystic or Nodulcystic Acne) are more likely to leave permanent acne scars than other types of acne. Getting treatment soon after the acne appears is often the best method to treating this, to help prevent more acne and acne scars. See your doctor or dermatologist for treatment if you have nodules.

Laser resurfacing is one type of treatment for acne scars. This procedure can take up to an hour. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin area that is going to be treated. After 3 to 10 days the skin should have healed fully.

Dermabrasion is another acne scar treatment. By using a rotating wire brush or spinning diamond instrument Dermabrasion is a process in which the surface of the skin is worn down. A new smoother layer of skin appears after the healing is complete. Dermabrasion takes longer for the affected area to heal, estimates are in the neighborhood of 10 days and up to 3 weeks.

These acne scar treatments cannot be used if you are currently having an outbreak of acne.

Chemical peels or microdermabrasion, are other options to consider for more serious cases of acne scars. These treatments can be done right in the office of the physician or dermatologist as well.

In the most severe cases, surgery may be recommended to remove deep acne scars.

Note: Avoid popping or squeezing your pimples.
